Artisan Deepa Kewat (left) and Hannah Warren set up Kewat’s new sewing machine at her home in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, India. Kewat was married when she was 15 years old and lives with her husband and daughter in one small room. Selling her saris through Jhoole has provided her with the sewing machine, which she can use to work at home while caring for her daughter. Jhoole, a nonprofit, fair-trade clothing company that provides its artisans with training, a living wage, health insurance, and child care, was founded by Warren, a former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar who studied in India. District 3040 (India) and five clubs in District 6420 (Illinois, USA) used a 2010 Matching Grant of $12,500 from The Rotary Foundation to support Jhoole, and members of the newly established Rotary Club of Maheshwar volunteer their time and business expertise. 10 January 2011.
